Media - Styles of music video

Below are some styles of music with music videos that best define that style.

 In concert and as live footage is when a music video is filmed within the artists live concert,this style is popular with rock artists. 30 seconds to mars - closer to the edge. The artists may have chosen this convention to show their individuality from other bands as rather than focusing the music video on their journey they focus it on their fans. This video could have been made as a thank you to fans. In my opinion this conventions execution was successful as it comes across as a genuine appreciation video to fans as it features their fans more than the band themselves.





Animation is when a music video incorporates or is primarily presented in cartoon-animation such as the video for Californication by RHCP. I believe the artist chose animation because it was popular at the time and presented their growth in visual imagery in videos as the video was released just before the start of a new decade. I believe the video was successful in presenting the progress in cgi and cartoon animation in that time period.











Interpretive is when a video visually portrays it's lyrics. This is seen in August Alsinas music video No love ft Nicki Minaj where the video depicts the lyrics of the couple breaking up and then getting back together. I believe the artists chose this convention as it is common for videos of the r&b genre to feature the artists as couples. By following this convention the artist are able to please the r&b audience and also attempt to outdo other similar videos of the same genre. I believe this was succesfull as shortly after the release of the video the main image of the song began trending on twitter with tweets and hashtags such as ' Couple goals '






 Narrative is when a music video tells a story through its visuals. This is seen in Lady Gaga's video for judas which shows her failing to stay loyal to her lover depicted as jesus and therefore falling to the corruption of Judas. I believe the artist chose this convention as the song itself tells a narrative. I think that the artist was successful in telling the narrative visually as the pace and imagery are aligned with lyrical content. The visual narrative is also easy to follow just as the lyrical content. This is because the video uses simple jump cuts which allow the viewer to see the story piece by piece. 

 Impressionist is when a music video uses impersonation of other bands/products/Media this can be seen in the video for My Way by Limp Bizkit where they impersonates various time eras and bands. I Believe the artist chose this convention as

Surrealist is when a video is/features imagery which would not be considered realistic or normal and can therefore be linked to the visuals of a dream or surrealism. A video which uses surrealism is Pills n Potions by Nicki Minaj 

Pastiche is when a video uses a piece of media or a time era and comedically re-enacts it. An example of this is Austin Mahone's Dirty Work which uses the popular TV show The office as a stimulus. 

 Parody is when a video comedically refers/mocks other popular media eg film or book and makes it funny. An example of this is The lonely island ft Rihanna Shy Ronnie which parodies the factual tale of Bonnie & Clyde. 

 Homage is when a music video pays homage to a film/Person or subject. An example of this is Wiz Khalifa's See you again which pays homage to Paul Walker & The fast and furious franchise. 





 Influence of commercials is when a video depicts commercial themes such as the news or newspaper. this can be seen in the video for Almost famous by G Eazy where he is portrayed behind News Magazine front covers.


referencing is when a music video makes reference to other popular media such as film or TV shows. An example of this is in the end of Die Antwoord's video for Baby's on fire where the car drives off leaving fire tracks. A reference to Back to the future
