Media - Techniques of music videos

Techniques of music videos

Cutting to the beat is when a video uses editing to cut or transition to a different scene whilst being ' in beat ' with the song or on a specific lyric. This is evident in Twenty one pilots video for Fairly local in which the video cuts to a new scene on the beginning of a new verse. As seen at 0.53 in the music video the beat drops (increases in bass ) and cuts to the artist in a different scene beginning the new verse as he raps " Yo,....."

Effects is when a video includes use of special effects or sound effects. Effects are more commonly seen in Videos with a higher budget such as Katy Perry's video for ET which incorporates special effects such as green screen to portray the artist in space.  The video incorporates both digital effects ( space ) and real effects ( the makeup and clothing on the artist ) This use of digital special effect can be see at 1.09 as the artist floats in space. The use of real effects can be seen at 2.17 as we see a closeup of the artists face covered in sfx makeup.

Miming and lip syncing is when a video matches the artist lip movements with pre-recorded sung or spoken vocals. This is commonly seen in A Tv show performance where an artist will pre record their vocals for the performance and then mime/lip sync during the actual performance. This can be seen in Nirvanas performance of Smells like teen spirit at the ' Top of the pops ' tv concert.

Multi - mage is a technique used in music videos where multiple videos are on one screen.  Through the use of multi mage a story can be told or visually shown. It can also just add to the style of the video. This technique deserves extreme concentration in the process as more than one thing is going on meaning the execution can be either successful or not. An example of Multi mage is at 4.25 for the video of Ushers - She came to give it to you video where multiple TV screens depict different images.

Camera movement is when a camera will move in a specific way during a music video. Camera movement includes establishing shots which generally set the scene at the beginning or end of the video. Long shots are also commonly used in camera movement and can add to the atmosphere of the video. Camera movement is used throughout Lady Gaga's video for GUY. One use of camera movement is at 3.54 where the camera pans out into an establishing shot of the palace and 'guys' leaving it. This camera movement is used to finish the story of the video/add to the narrative and meaning.

Camera angles are used to give an audience different views of the action in a music video. Camera angles can make a huge impact on the meaning and style of the music video. These camera angles can portray the artist/character as either weak/strong or big/small . An example of a camera angle is at 1.01 in the video for Long Live Asap by Asap Rocky. This low angle shot portrays the artist as powerful and strong as we are looking up to him on a thrown.

Chorma Key is when green screen,a coloured background placed behind the artist is used to allow seperately filmed footage to be added to the final image. An example of this is in the video for David Guetta ft Nicki Minaj - Hey Mama at 0.15 where the artist is presented in a desert area. Chorma key is commonly used to add further effect or narrative to a video or because an Artist is unable to be in that location.
